Size, budget for new OCTV station increased

Oxford Community Television’s new station hasn’t even been built yet and it’s already been expanded.

Last week, the Oxford Area Cable Communications Commission voted 3-1 to increase the budget for the new station from $300,000 to $350,000.

It will be constructed in Seymour Lake Township Park this year.

This additional money will allow the size of the proposed station to increase by 525 square feet in order to better meet current and future needs, according to officials. The new station will be 3,010 square feet, including a garage.

“In two years, we would make up that (additional) $50,000 just with what we’ve saved in rent,” noted Teri Stiles, production manager for OCTV, during the presentation to commissioners.

Since 2005, OCTV has been housed at 1775 N. Lapeer Rd. in Oxford. It rents 2,800 square feet of commercial space for $2,000 per month. The lease is set to expire in February 2019.

OCTV has a fund balance of $456,411, of which $350,000 has now been set aside for all costs associated with the new station, from plans and construction to moving expenses and furnishings.

The new station will be built in conjunction with the 3,034-square-foot senior center that the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department is planning to construct within a $400,000 budget of its own.

OCTV’s station will be contiguous to the senior center, which will be connected to the existing multi-purpose community room and parks/rec. administrative offices, both of which were built last year.
