OHS press box vandalized again

For the second time in about a month, the press box at the Oxford High School football stadium was broken into and trashed by an unknown vandal or vandals.

“It’s disappointing,” said Athletic Director Cole Andrews. “You never want this stuff to happen to your facility.”

The damage was discovered Monday by Jim Rourke, the district employee who handles security at OHS.

“My (video) cameras were down this morning, so I came out to see why,” he said.

Piles of paper towel covered the floor.

Someone had cut the wires for the security cameras. Those wires are located inside the press box.

Thousands of dollars worth of damage was left behind.

Almost all of the press box’s windows were broken. With most of them, it appears white marbles, potentially fired by a slingshot, were used to punch holes in the glass. In some cases, the marbles actually remained lodged in the double-pane windows.

The floor was littered with pieces of broken ceiling tiles that had been ripped down.

Piles of paper towel were left everything.

Electronic equipment appeared to be damaged.

A door and its frame were wrecked.

Shards of broken glass were scattered throughout the press box and on the bleachers below it.

Gray duct tape was used to form the letters “LO” on one of the windows, an obvious reference to Oxford’s sports rival, Lake Orion. Despite this, there’s no actual evidence to suggest a student (or students) from Lake Orion High School was responsible for the destruction.

The last time a vandal (or vandals) hit the press box was sometime between April 7 and April 11, when the damage was discovered. It was estimated to be $10,000 or more. “Oxford Sux” and “LO” were written on a door and window.

“We’ve just got to figure out a way to secure this facility more and catch whoever’s doing this,” Andrews said.

Oxford Community Schools continues to offer a $500 reward for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for these crimes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland County Sheriff’s Det. Shane Freiberg at (248) 969-0369.

The sheriff’s office still has no viable leads concerning the first incident.

“Not one person has called (with a tip),” Freiberg said.
