Cats score morale-boosting win

Never, ever count Oxford’s gridiron warriors out because they don’t give up on games – or seasons, for that matter.

They dig in and find the will to win. That’s the Wildcat way.

On Friday night, the varsity football squad snapped its three-game losing streak with a solid – and much-needed – victory at Farmington High School.

The Cats clipped the Falcons’ wings 28-21 in a game that came down to the fourth quarter. Oxford’s record is now 2-3.

“I thought it was a very good win for the team and the coaches,” said Head Coach Bud Rowley. “The last three weeks have been very brutal, very tough on the kids. They worked so hard in the off-season and then, things just didn’t go quite their way.”

Oxford and Farmington were tied at 21 a piece late in the fourth quarter when the scrappy Wildcat defense rose to the challenge.

Senior defensive lineman Campbell Coker sacked the Falcons’ quarterback and forced a fumble that was recovered by fellow senior Cameron Petrusev deep inside Farmington territory.

That turnover was quickly converted into a touchdown by Oxford senior Ethan Williams, who took the ball into the end zone on a 15-yard scamper.

Williams had a huge night as he was responsible for all four of Oxford’s touchdowns.

He racked up 160 yards on 19 carries.

Rowley described the victory as “a very good team effort.”

“The seniors stepped up and made some big plays,” he said. “Everybody played with some enthusiasm, with some excitement.”

“You cannot imagine,” noted Rowley, how big of a morale boost this win was for his team. It resulted in a collective “sigh of relief” amongst his players.

“Now, they know they can win,” Rowley said. “It was a smooth and fun ride home.”

The Cats are hoping to gain some momentum from this win as they travel to Stoney Creek High School this Friday.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

“Stoney’s rolling along. They’ve won some games. They’ve got a new coach,” Rowley said. “We’re looking forward to it. It’s only a 30-minute drive, which is a good thing.”
