Oxford Middle School’s wrestling team recently took first place at the Oakland County tournament, giving them back-to-back county championships.

“The boys really came and brought their ‘A’ game,” said Coach Jack Beall. “We came out in the early rounds and established a tempo and pace that the other teams just could not keep up with.”

Oxford walked away with 376 points, followed by VanHoosen with 179.5 points, Pierce 164, Hart 146.5 and Clarkston Unified 141.5.

“Before we knew it, we were up 100 points, then 150 points, then closed by taking the title with an almost 200-point lead over the second place Van Hoosen team,” Beall said.

The coaches are very proud of the way the kids battled, particularly in the quarter-final round, where we put 16 kids in the semi-finals, and then again in the semi-final round, where we put a record 12 kids in the finals,” Beall continued. “We came away with eight individual champions, also a tournament record.”

Champions were Cory Thomas, Auggie Anderson, Darren McLeod, Sal Vackaro, Jack Smith, Travis Swanson, Levi Garcia and Mitchell Viviano.

Second-place finishers included Kade Rushlow, Tate Myre, Gavin Green and Kewone Burton.

Taking third place were Koen Eberhard, Niko Hatzigeorgiou, Zach Call, and John Aschuitto.
