April is Civitan Awareness Month

The Oxford Township Board and Oxford Village Council finally agreed on something last week ? both approved resolutions proclaiming April as ‘Civitan Awareness Month.?
Civitan International was founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama. Locally, the Great Oaks Civitan Club was chartered Nov. 20, 2003.
Over the years, Civitan has contributed millions of dollars to help people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
Civitan also promotes good citizenship and challenges all to think of citizenship as a privilege and responsibility.
Locally, Great Oaks Civitan has worked closely with Redwood, Inc. ? group homes for people with developmental disabilities ? by throwing a Valentine’s Day party, conducting a yard cleanup, planting a vegetable garden and making sure 36 Christmas stockings were filled with gifts last year.
Great Oaks Civitan has also worked with Oxford-Orion FISH and sponsored Oxford’s Concerts in the Park.

The Oxford Village Council recently approved a special resolution making April ‘Civitan Awareness Month? in the community.
Oxford Village President Renee Donovan (left), herself a member of Civitan, presented the resolution to Tracy Miller (center), president of the Great Oaks Civitan Club, and Oxford resident Merle Smith, a member of the Pontiac Civitan Club.
