Board conflict ‘fully resolved’

The conflict that surrounded the issue of “board governance” was declared “fully resolved” at the June 13 Oxford Board of Education meeting.

For details on the events that led to the conflict, please read the May 17 article, “Board Governance a source of conflict for school officials,” and “Concerns expressed over how board conducts itself,” at www.oxfordleader.com.

According to President Dan D’Alessandro, a meeting between he, Trustee Tom Donnelly, Vice President Joyce Brasington and Superintendent Tim Throne was held recently to discuss the conflict.

“(We came) together to discuss some of the comments that were going on back and forth. I am happy to say that we discussed it the way that it should be discussed … and we came to a very positive ending to that meeting… I’m very proud of the way it was handled. They discussed things appropriately and it’s been resolved.”

On June 12, Brasington issued an apology to all Oxford Board of Education members via email which read, “After reviewing my statement (regarding) the May 9 Board of Education meeting, and meeting with Tom, Dan, and Tim, I regret the words I chose. I now believe Tom and Mark (Stepek) did not intentionally question my character and integrity through an open discussion. They used my actions at a meeting held in April as an example of how the board should or should not conduct themselves,” she wrote.

“They did not intend to make this example personal. They have acted ethically and represented our board and community with the highest level of integrity and I should not have called their character into question at the May 23 meeting.”
