Booters go 1-1 for the week

The Oxford Wildcats varsity soccer team went 1-1 last week– taking a loss to Brandon and securing a win against Groves.

The team visited FML rival Brandon on a misty and wet night of soccer on Oct. 6, ultimately falling to Brandon with a 5-1 score.

Senior captain Mitch Morawski fed a great pass across the mouth of the goal as sophomore Nicholas Morawski drilled the ball into the back of the net that night. Brandon scored just before half to tie the game.

The Blackhawks ramped up their offense to add four more goals in the second half. Oxford continued to apply pressure with numerous chances but could not convert. Senior keeper Matt Black made 8 saves in goal.

On Oct. 3, Oxford took on the OAA White leaders Birmingham Groves, ultimately securing a 2-1 win.

Senior captain Mitchel Morawski got on the board early in the first half on a great feed from sophomore Chris Escalante.

With the Wildcats up a goal they began to settle in a control the game. The Falcons would not slow their pace and earned a goal on a counter which saw them tie the game at 1-1.

Freshman keeper Tristan Bennett made key saves throughout the half.

The second half was just as intense, if not more so, and the Wildcats frustrated the Falcons throughout the second half. Bennett made save after save to keep Groves off the board.

With less than five minutes to play sophomore Nicholas Morawski took the ball down the outside, fed it to Mitchel Morawski who took a quick shot. The ball bounced off the keeper into the onrushing Escalante who drilled the ball in the back of the net.

Oxford secured the win with a total team effort. The defense of Jesus Escalante, Sam Huller, Nathan Vaquera and Tyler Dejong thwarted any offensive threat from Groves.

The team is now 3-10-3 overall.

Next up, the Cats will take on Waterford Kettering at home Monday, October 16 at 7 p.m.
