Oxford’s bowling teams continued their winning tradition in the last week, with the boys and girls taking on the Cougar Classic and the boys dominating Birmingham United.

On Dec. 8, both teams competed in the Cougar Classic. The ladies led the way for Oxford and finished in third place. Senior and captain Megan Armbruster was also chosen for the all-tournament team at the end of the day.

The boys took fifth place in the Cougar Classic, but landed a number of boys on the all-tournament team. Junior Justin Powell, junior Zach Barrows and sophomore Tony Verbeke represented the Wildcat name among the competition’s top players.

A few days later on Dec. 10, the boys faced off against a young Birmingham United squad. With their heightened level of experience, the boys decimated the competition 30-0. Barrows led the way for the boys with games of 254 and 235. Other top bowlers in the match were Verbeke with a score of 246, Powell with a 202 game, junior Justin Sisson with a 278 game and junior Luke Acton with a score of 221.

Aside from the win, seven Wildcats earned their varsity letters at the game. Sisson, Verbeke, Powell, sophomore Collin Massie, junior Austin Couch, senior Dalton Hopps and senior Garrett Hill all earned letters at the match.

“This was a fun evening for all of these guys,” Head Coach JR Lafnear said of the night. “They work so hard at this game and to see the hard work pay off it outstanding. Austin, Dalton and Garrett have been in the program for years and for them to get on the scoreboard on Varsity was great. They are all outstanding young men and I’m thrilled for them.”

Both teams will hit the lanes again on Dec. 13 when they travel to Troy Athens.
