Everest student believes teacher has magic

He is a local teacher spreading the magic of education and support.
Matthew Joneson is a third grade teacher at Everest Academy. He had the honor of being nominated for the Magic 105.1 teacher of the year award, and the surprise began with the spirit of 9-year-old Grant Koster.
While driving in the car with his mother, Koster heard about the 105.1 contest. The station was looking for teachers to be nominated. Once Koster heard this, an idea clicked. Both Koster and his mother, Gale, instantly thought of Joneson.
‘He is a really nice guy and he has a big heart,? said Koster.
Koster decided at that moment, to sit down and write all the things he liked about Joneson. Once complete, Koster sent the letter to the station, and Jim Harper read it on the air the next morning.
Now, Joneson is in the drawing. If chosen, Joneson will be honored as ‘Teacher of the Year,? and will win $10,000. Koster did not walk away empty handed for his efforts: he won the Shrek 2 video.
Koster is proud to have Joneson as a teacher. He simply loves his teaching style and hopes Joneson knows how much he is appreciated.
‘I like the things he says to us,? said Koster. ‘Sometimes he comes into class and says today we will have an optimistic day, or you boys are the coolest bunch of guys.?
Joneson is also recognized for his reward system. He allows his students to earn coupons for good behavior and the kids are able to choose a prize.
Matthew Joneson resides in Orion with his wife Julie. He has been teaching third grade boys and middle school band at Everest Academy for three years. Prior to teaching, Joneson was an engineer.
‘It was really exciting when I found out about the nomination and recognition,? said Joneson. ‘The job is not being done for the recognition, its being done to help kids and families.?
Joneson added this is a fun job , and he thanks Koster for noticing his teaching styles.
‘That is a really important trait to give thanks to people and appreciate those things,? said Joneson.
The winner of the Magic 105.1 ‘Teacher of the Year? contest will be announced at the end of the year.
