Park to host massive LAX tournament June 3-4

Love lacrosse and looking for something to do this weekend?

Head over to Seymour Lake Township Park for the 2017 Midwest LAX Bash on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4.

A total of 88 youth teams – boys and girls – from Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are expected to compete in the tournament. Participants will range in age from 8U to 14U.

“It’s the largest co-ed lacrosse tournament in the State of Michigan,” said Brian Kaminskas, who’s organizing the event with his brother Michael.

Folks expecting to see Wildcats on the field will be disappointed. “We do not have any of the Oxford teams this year,” Kaminskas noted.

Games start at 8 a.m. both days. Play ends at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

“We’re going to have 16 fields (going) at once,” Kaminskas said. “Typically, it’s 14. We’re a little larger this year.”

The park is expected to be jam-packed with both participants and spectators.

“We usually have about 5,500 to 6,000 (people) – somewhere in there. That’s over the two days,” Kaminskas said.

There is no admission fee for spectators.

“They’re free to come on in and enjoy as much as they want,” Kaminskas said. “It’s a really good family environment. It’s a lot of fun. As long as the weather holds up, it’s usually a pretty exciting day for everybody.”

“Parking’s at a premium, though. Just be prepared,” warned Dan Sullivan, a recreation supervisor with the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department.

In addition to the games, Kaminskas said there will be four or five food trucks on site as well as vendors selling lacrosse-related merchandise and other athletic equipment.

Kaminskas noted this is the fourth year he and his brother have held this tournament at Seymour Lake Township Park. “It’s hands-down one of the top facilities,” he said.

He was very complimentary of the parks and rec. staff. “They’re truly unbelievable to work with,” Kaminskas said. “We do these all over the country and these guys are the tops.”
