Senior gets trapped beneath car

A 74-year-old Orion Township man is reported to be in critical condition at McLaren Oakland hospital in Pontiac after his car rolled on top of him Monday afternoon in Oxford Township.

The man was attempting to jump-start a 2003 Ford Taurus with his 2001 Pontiac Sunfire in a vacant lot adjacent to 861 Snyder St., according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

He backed his Pontiac up next to the Ford, but did not set the parking brake, according to sheriff’s investigators. He left the vehicle running with its manual transmission in neutral.

Sheriff’s investigators said the vehicle then began to roll forward. The Orion man moved in front of the Pontiac and attempted to stop it.

The car rolled into Snyder St. and trapped the Orion man beneath it. He had to be freed by Oxford Fire personnel.

Sheriff’s investigators tested the Pontiac’s parking brake and determined it was not functioning, so it wouldn’t have made a difference had it been set.

The incident remains under investigation.
