Seniors stretch, strengthen for better health

Realizing the importance of physical fitness later in life, the Independence Township Senior Center is testing several new classes for this fall to promote health and well-being for area residents.
On July 8, the center held a ‘trial? strength and stretch class taught by Nancy Boch at St. Daniel’s Catholic church in Clarkston.
‘Don’t stretch beyond what is comfortable. Stretching should feel good,? Boch told the participants during the workout.
Boch, a certified senior fitness instructor, teaches classes throughout northern Oakland County in addition to Clarkston.
‘This is geared toward seniors,? Boch said.
Class participants worked on routines in addition to relaxation techniques after the hour-long workout. According to Boch, the class focuses on building strength with lightweight resistance bands for added effectiveness.
The class also featured a dance aspect that promoted cardio vascular activity which in turns aids in weight loss and better utilization of blood sugars.
‘Since I’ve started taking this class I’m so much stronger and healthier,? Elaine Sheppard said.
A regular workout participant, Sheppard has been taking classes with Boch for the past two years.
‘I usually don’t miss a class,? Sheppard said.
Not only was the class a beneficial workout, it also gave participants a chance to meet new friends in the area.
‘It’s nice companionship,? Sheppard said.
The strength and stretch class isn’t the only new class slated for this fall at the senior center.
In addition to a dance and stretch class, Boch will be debuting a Chi Gong class. Chi Gong is similar to Tai Chi and is often thought of as ‘Feng Shui for the body.?
‘It’s similar to Tai Chi, but mess less complex,? Boch said. ‘It focuses on healing through movement, breathwork, visualization and self massage.?
According to senior center director Margaret Bartos, the classes are a direct result of member requests.
