Sheriff honors local citizens for good deeds

Eight local residents received ‘Citizen Citations? from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Friday as part of its ‘National Police Week Awards Day Ceremony.?
Sheriff Michael Bouchard honored a group of private citizens who have ‘distinguished themselves by making a significant contribution to law enforcement through their personal outstanding performance.?
Oxford Township Supervisor Bill Dunn was presented a citation for his close and cooperative working relationship with sheriff’s personnel contracted to police the township.
The citation read to the audience stated, ‘Mr. Dunn is very supportive of the Sheriff’s Office staff stationed in Oxford Township and works totally with them to ensure that the working relationship between the township and Sheriff’s Office is a smooth running operation. The safety and the security of the township residents is a top priority to Mr. Dunn. He does his utmost to assist the sheriff’s office, enabling them to provide this service. Mr. Dunn is a true asset to Oxford Township as well as the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and we thank you Mr. Dunn.?
Metamora resident Skip McWilliams was honored for saving the life of an Oxford family’s dog.
‘In Oxford Township on December 30, 2003, a small dog was struck two times over on Lapeer Road. The injuries to the dog appeared to be severe and deputies who arrived at the scene thought the dog would have to be destroyed. Passerby Mr. McWilliams offered aid. Mr. McWilliams decided to take the dog to an emergency animal hospital for treatment. When the owners of the dog were notified of the dog’s condition, the prognosis was not good. Cost of treatment was great. However, Mr. McWilliams not only rescued the dog once, but twice when he offered his assistance by paying for the dog’s treatment. The dog’s owners tried to repay Mr. McWilliams, but he would not accept. Your generosity and compassion saved this dog’s life. The dog’s owner commends you as well as the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office,? the citation read.
Cecelia Cash, of Oxford, and Peter Hovland, of Leonard, were recognized for rescuing a driver from a burning vehicle.
Their citation read, ‘On the morning of November 29, 2003 in Addison Township, Cecelia Cash and Peter Hovland witnessed a one-car collision resulting in the driver being trapped after the car caught fire. Without regard to their own safety, both Ms. Cash and Mr. Hovland pried open the burning vehicle’s back hatch to extricate the driver from the car. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. Your courageous efforts saved the driver’s life. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office thanks you for your heroic and lifesaving measures. You are an asset to our community.?
Oxford residents Brendon and John Krug and Ryan and Tony Markowitz were honored for saving a friend’s life last year.
‘While swimming on the Clear Lake in Oxford Township on July 23, 2003, Brendon and John Krug and Ryan and Tony Markowitz saw one of their friends passed out while swimming. The four young men were aware that their friend had a heart condition and needed to take medication in order to control his heartbeat. Without hestitation, the four young men helped swim their friend across the lake about a hundred yards, where they pulled him from the water. They flagged down a passing motorist who drove all five boys to their friend’s home to receive his medication. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office thanks you for your compassion and swift action. All of you saved your friend’s life and you are to be commended,? read the citation.
