Softball team claims first-ever league title

The Varsity Softball team closed out their Flint Metro League career by winning the school’s first ever FML softball title after sweeping Holly on Monday, May 24.
‘The girls number one goal this season was to win the league. They wanted to go out with a bang since this was our last year in the FML,? said Head Coach Kristi McDevitt.
The girls opened the FML season with back-to-back losses to Flint Kearsley in April, but rebounded nicely to win 16 in a row. ‘They stumbled against Kearsley, but got up, dusted themselves and went after what they wanted, a league championship,? McDevitt said.
The only other time Oxford came close to winning a league title since joining the league in 1983 was back in 1990 and 2005, when they finished tied for second with Fenton.
Against Holly, the Wildcats won game one 5-0 and game two 5-1.
In the first game, freshman Autumn Cervantez had two RBI’s and senior Corrine Luxton went 2-3 with an RBI.
The second game saw sophomore Courtney Wroubel finish 3-3 with a single, double, triple and a RBI.
Luxton dominated Broncho hitters in both games, striking out 10 while giving up eight hits in the two games combined.
Up next for Oxford are two non-conference doubleheaders at home against Birmingham Seaholm High School on Wednesday, May 26 at 4 p.m. and Goodrich High School on Friday, May 28.
They kick off district play against Lake Orion on Tuesday, June 1 at Rochester Adams beginning at 4 p.m.
