Tough week for OA icers

It was a tough week for the Oxford Avondale (OA) United Hockey team.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, the team hosted the Royal Oak Ravens hockey team and ultimately fell 9-4.

The Ravens came in with a 6-2 record and started the scoring at the 10:48 mark with a power-play goal on a rebound off junior Goalie Aaron Angelo. They scored again on another rebound at the 4:41 mark of the period.

OA finally scored when sophomore forward Matt Schultz stole a puck deep in the Ravens’ end and slipped it in with only one second left in the period to make it 2-1.

Royal Oak was able to extend their lead on three individual breakaways to put them up 5-1 midway through the second period.

OA then took advantage of a power play at the 5:10 mark on a terrific play.

Junior forward Jimmy Carter redirected a pass from senior defenseman Griffin Burk and sophomore defenseman J.J. Poolton to make it 5-2.

Royal Oak scored again at the beginning of the third period to make it 7-2. OA scored at the 10:06 mark when Poolton sent a wrist shot into the upper corner of the net. Matt Schultz and junior forward Ben Pratt assisted on the goal.

OA made it 7-4 on another wrist shot from Poolton for his second goal of the game, assisted again by Schultz.

Royal Oak added two more goals late in the period to clinch the game.

OA was led that evening by Poolton (2 goals, 1 assist) and Schultz (1 goal, 2 assists), each with three points. Goalie Aaron Angelo made 24 saves on 33 shots.

That loss was the second of the week.

On Sunday, Dec. 10, OA fell to Notre Dame Prep 3-0.

OA’s next game is Saturday, Dec. 23 at the Detroit Skate Club against Allen Park Cabrini.
