Brandon Twp.- Leah West calls herself a modern-day hippie.
The 17-year-old Brandon High School junior loves to help people and the environment and it shows? she has done more than 100 hours of community service in the past few years.
‘I’ve faced lots of difficulties growing up, but I have lots of people helping me get through them,? says West. ‘I like to help others who need help, too.?
West will be one of 120 area youth honored during the 20th Annual Youth Recognition Awards Night, 7 p.m., May 3, at Brandon Middle School, 609 Ortonville Road.
The event, sponsored by Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance, recognizes local kids nominated for volunteering services beyond what might be expected in their school, church, and/or community life and youngsters who have made a turnaround in their grades and attitude.
Youth Recognition Chairperson Diane Howell said the nominees include kids who have donated hair to Locks of Love for cancer patients; rebuilt homes in Appalachia; worked on local seniors? homes and
