Can they fill the bus?

Oxford Community Schools is hosting a friendly competitive can drive to come together and care for the community during COVID.
Based on the premise that “nothing connects us more than when we come together to help out those who are most in need,” Oxford mentorship students have created a community-wide can drive to benefit FISH Food Pantry lasting until Friday (December 18). According to Mentorship/Leadership Teacher Katie Goetz, students wanted to stay connected for a common cause during the week of remote learning before the holiday break and have created a safe and fun method to collect canned food donations throughout the district.
To add some school spirit to the can drive, each school level will compete against one another to see who donates the most between them (high school level vs. middle school level vs. pre-k/elementary school level). Oxford High School and Oxford Middle School Leadership students along with our National Honor Society students are creating fun activities to occur at their schools to promote this event. The school level that has the most canned food will receive bragging rights and will get free cookies from the school’s nutrition services department.
Not to interfere with the remote learning schedule, donation times will be daily from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and tomorrow. Three school buses will be used as collection points throughout the district.
One bus will be parked in the Oxford High School north parking lot, one in the Oxford Middle School lot and one will be roving amongst the elementary schools throughout the week where the cans can be dropped off (Lakeville Elementary – Dec. 16, and Oxford Elementary School/Daniel Axford Elementary School /Oxford Early Learning Center drop off will be at Oxford Elementary School – Dec. 17). Oxford Virtual Academy students can donate to the bus corresponding to their grade level.
During donation times, district staff will be present and schools are planning on providing some outdoor physically-distanced, COVID safe entertainment such as food trucks, musical performances, games, and more. On Friday, December 18, all of the buses will travel to deliver the cans of food to the FISH Food Pantry.
Community members are welcome and encouraged to participate and donate to the bus of their choice as well.
