Crash damages fire truck

An Oxford fire truck sustained an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 in damage after a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup truck crashed into it at the intersection of Oakwood and Gardner roads around 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14.
The 1996 fire engine was eastbound on Oakwood Rd. ? responding to a medical call on Delano Rd. ? when it was struck by a vehicle headed north on Gardner Rd.
According to Fire Chief Pete Scholz, the driver of the pickup, a 42-year-old Lapeer man, was traveling ‘too fast? on a ‘very, very slippery road? that was ‘completely covered with snow and ice.?
As a result, when the driver came over the crest of the hill, he was unable to yield for the stop sign at the intersection.
‘He proceeded to slide right down and smash directly into the side of our engine,? Scholz said. ‘He T-boned it right at the front wheel.?
‘Fortunately, nobody was hurt,? he noted.
The chief estimated the accident caused somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000 worth of damages to the fire engine.
‘The damage is considerable,? he said. ‘It’s not drivable. There’s definitely quite a bit of structural damage to it.?
With the exception of a $1,000 deductible, the fire department’s insurance carrier will pay for the truck’s repairs.
‘On a fire truck, nothing’s cheap,? Scholz said. ‘It’s $275 to $300 for a tire alone.?
The driver responsible for the crash was ticketed by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Dept. His truck was totalled.
