Start your engines and preheat those ovens because the Sixth Annual Classic Car and Cupcake Challenge is just around the corner.

Automobile aficionados and folks with a sweet tooth are encouraged to cruise on over to the Addison Township Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 1-4 p.m. to admire the rides that made Detroit the Motor City and participate in a bake-off to determine whose from-scratch batter makes the best cupcakes. The library is located at 1400 Rochester Rd. in Lakeville.

Whether you like baking them or eating them, if you’re a fan of cupcakes, the Addison Twp. Public Library is the place to be on Saturday, Sept. 14. Photo by C.J. Carnacchio.

“This is a chance to bring the community together,” said Library Director Jaema Berman.

With all of the excitement left over from the Woodward Dream Cruise in August, Berman thinks this is a great way to carry that enthusiasm into September.

There will be a bake sale and raffle that includes prizes from Achatz Handmade Pie Co. as well as other baking and car-oriented items. When asked how the combination of classic cars and cupcakes came to be, Berman replied, “I have a very creative staff that comes up with brilliant ideas.”

Those young and young at heart will be able to enjoy inflatables at the Classic Car and Cupcake Challenge while a DJ spins Oldies music all day long.

For those looking to showcase their classic cars at the event, there is a $10 entry fee. Trophies for first, second and third place will be awarded.

The cupcake bake-off is free to enter, however, those participating are asked to provide an additional one or two dozen cupcakes for the bake sale. Trophies will be awarded to winners in youth and adult categories.

Money raised at this event will be used to help fund construction of a new public library in Addison. Officials are planning to build a new 5,000-square-foot facility on Rochester Rd. between Milmine Rd. and Cantley St.

This fund-raiser has evolved over the years and Berman hopes it will continue long after the funding goal for a new library is met.

“(We are) always looking for exciting, new, creative ways to bring the community together,” she said. “We have extraordinary talent here and we want to showcase that.”
