District to survey students about bullying

The Oxford school district will soon have greater insight when it comes to student views regarding its bullying and harassment prevention policies.

At the Sept. 27 board meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Denise Sweat reported district officials will administer surveys to students using a service known as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP).

The surveys will be issued to all students in grades 3-12 throughout October.

Last year’s survey questions were provided through a national anti-bullying survey.

But feedback indicated they were too confusing, according to Sweat, so the district will be returning to Olweus to gather data.

Olweus surveys were first used in Oxford during the 2011-12 school year.

According to Sweat, officials will use the data gathered through Olweus this year to identify how instances of bullying compare to instances when the survey was first issued.

“I think that based on this data, we’ll be able to identify areas of concern (and) provide some targeted intervention to those buildings based on the data results,” Sweat said.

According to Sweat, the district will use the survey results to establish specific intervention plans for each school, in order to better combat bullying.

Officials are expecting to have survey results finalized by mid-November.

“(I’m) glad to see our report on bullying prevention and (that we’re) looking at those numbers,” said school Trustee Mike Schweig. “Those are things that we need to address and I’m glad to see we’re doing it in such a manner as a survey and that we’re getting more focus on it.”
