The Oxford High School Equestrian Team is looking to continue its winning ways.

The Wildcats clinched the first two Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association District 2 competitions this weekend.

They will return to the Armada Fairground for the last district meet Saturday, riding again against teams from Notre Dame, Lapeer and Lake Orion in the B division.

“This year’s team has exceeded my expectations by winning the first two district meets,” said Dee Shepard, Oxford’s head coach. “We will continue to work on perfecting our riding this week so we may take home the third meet and our 20th district championship.

“The Oxford team carries a sense of pride in it’s winning tradition that keeps a strong sense of commitment to continue the winning streak.”

Oxford won the first meet with 224 points, with Notre Dame coming in second with 191, Lapeer in third with 95 and Lake Orion with 83 points. The Wildcats clinched the second competition Sunday with 214 points, with Notre Dame with 178, and Lapeer and Lake Orion both earning 106 points.

The top two teams following Saturday’s competition will continue on to the MIHA Region E Championship at the Ingham County Fairgrounds Sept. 27-29. Teams compete based on the number of riders, with B teams consisting of five to 10 riders.

Riders compete in everything from showmanship to jumping and barrel racing.

“The success of the team is greatly influenced by the dedication, knowledge and commitment of its coaches as well as the riders,” Shepard said.

The top two teams at the regional championship will earn a spot at the MIHA State Championship, Oct. 9-13 at the Midland Fairgrounds. Oxford has qualified for the state championship for the past 19 years.
