Field trip through time

Ninth-graders in Oxford High School’s American Studies classes Friday visited the war museum at American Legion Post 108. Established in 1994, the museum features 165 military uniforms and other assorted artifacts ranging from Civil War-era to Desert Storm, all donated by Oxford and Orion veterans and their families. American uniforms from all branches of the Armed Forces are on display along with World War II-era German and Japanese uniforms. Teacher Kerri Brenneman said students are currently studying World War II and this field trip gave them the opportunity to view history up close and in person as opposed to just reading about it in textbooks. The museum tour also gave students the chance to hear a ‘real life perspective? about war from a veteran, in this case museum curator and Past Legion Post Commander Jim Parkhurst, who served in Vietnam.
