Four grapplers place at state finals

Eight Wildcat wrestlers competed at the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Individual Finals, held March 2 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Four of those wrestlers walked away with All-State honors.

Junior Sergio Borg finished fourth while senior Garrett Tyrell, junior Ryan Miller and sophomore Devin Trevino each finished seventh.

Other qualified wrestlers that day were sophomore Caleb Tabert, sophomore Trent Myre, senior Byron Schlickenmeyer, junior Dalton Myers.

Six of those eight qualifying wrestlers had finished fourth in the region, according to Head Coach Paul McDevitt, automatically placing them in matches against first and second-placed wrestlers from other regions.

“I was really happy. I think the first day we had a lot of tough match-ups,” McDevitt said. “We were going up against a lot of the top kids right off the bat and I was really proud of the way that we handled adversity and bounced back and came in on the second day and won some matches. They did a nice job. It was a great season. I’m very proud of all of the wrestlers and the parents as well, for having worked so hard this year.”
