Four solid quarters equal win for hoopsters

After battling Fenton hard for two-and-a-half quarters on Jan. 4, the Boys Varsity Basketball team put together a solid four quarters in their 54-33 victory over Brandon on Friday night.
It was the defense that stepped up in the first half, holding Brandon to 13 total points, including five in the first quarter.
The Wildcats were up 28-13 by halftime.
They extended their lead to 19 after an 18 point offensive outburst in the third quarter.
There would be little fourth quarter drama as the defense clamped down, holding Brandon to six fourth quarter points.
Varsity Head Coach Paul Marfia was pleased with his offensive and defensive execution in the game. He noted that 10 out of the 14 players that suited up were able to score at least once. Senior Tommy Neiman led the Wildcats with 18 points. Senior Gary Wurtz added nine points while senior Mike Bertling contributed eight points in the victory.
Marfia was also pleased to see his teams total number of assists go up from the previous game. The team had 15 assists on 22 scored baskets. In the game prior to this, they only had five assists.
They also shot more free throws than their opponent for the first time this season.
With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 2-5 on the year, and 2-3 in the Flint Metro League.
The game on Monday, Jan. 11 against Lapeer East was postponed due to the tragic deaths of three Oxford High School freshmen. The East game was rescheduled to Feb. 8.
They play at Swartz Creek on Friday, Jan. 15 and Linden on Monday, Jan. 18.
