Competing in the Oakland County Championships at Lake Orion High School on Oct. 4-5, the Oxford Wildcats came in sixth-place with a score of 133 points. This sixth-place showing is the best in the 14-year history of the girls’ swim and dive program.

Representing Oxford in the diving events, junior Amelia Knotts finished 12th on Oct. 4 with a score of 298.75. Someone that has progressed tremendously throughout the season, head coach Jackie Rank was very pleased with Knotts’ performance.

Beginning the swimming events on Oct. 5, senior Ashlee Weltyk, juniors Grace Charnstrom and Jenna Fistler, and sophomore Cali Schnur came in fourth-place in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:50:45. An improvement on their already school record time, these four will be among the girls competing in the state qualifying preliminaries – also at Lake Orion High School – on Nov. 6-7.

Showing off her skill in the 200-meter events, Fistler, who is one of the team captains, was crowned the county champion in the 200-meter freestyle. Saving her best for the biggest moment of the season thus far, Fistler’s time was a personal best 1:53.66.

A couple of other top-10 finishes to note: Weltyk was ninth in the 200-meter individual medley at 2:14.08, and Fistler was sixth in the 100-meter freestyle at 0:53.08.

Fistler’s 100-meter freestyle performance was good enough for yet another school record. In a very cool scene, she was able to capture the record with the previous record holder, Haley Kornburger, in attendance.

A 2014 graduate of Oxford High School, Kornburger went on to swim collegiately in the Big Ten for the Michigan State Spartans. Now an assistant coach for the Troy Athens Red Hawks, Kornburger and Fistler were able to talk and get a picture together post-race.

Currently sitting atop the OAA White standings at 3-0, the girls will next be in action on Thursday, Oct. 10 when they host the Troy Colts in a dual meet. 3-2 in league play, the Colts are tied with Bloomfield Hills for third-place in the OAA White.
