Grapplers claim 4th straight regional title

The Wildcat varsity wrestling team claimed its fourth consecutive Division 1 regional title Feb.15 by beating out Rochester Adams and rival Clarkston.

“It’s a great accomplishment. This is actually our ninth time in the past 10 years of going to state finals,” said Head Coach Paul McDevitt. “It really makes me proud of all of the (coaches and parents) we have throughout the entire program. (Their support) has helped us do some amazing things over the past decade.”

In the regional finals, Oxford squared-off against hosting team, Rochester Adams.

The Cats jumped out to a 41-0 lead before Adams even got its first win on the mat.

The Wildcats ultimately ended up topping Adams 54-12.

Oxford beat rival Clarkston in the semifinals by a score of 34-18. In the semi-finals, Oxford wins were scored by Sergio Borg, Ryan Miller, Caleb Tabert, Trent Myre, Devin Trevino, Dallas Winkelman, Byron Schlickenmeyer, Matthew Curtis and Nathan Call.

Miller (140) went 3-0 and Tabert (145) recorded a pin in the first round.

Trevino (160) scored a 10-2 decision that day while Winkelman (189) earned a 9-1 win for the Wildcats. Schlickenmeyer (215) earned a win by void, making it 41-0.

Other wins for Oxford were scored by sophomore Liam Hillary, senior Garrett Tyrrell, Borg, Trent Myre, Austin Schllicht, and Joe Good.

The Wildcats now advance to the team state finals Feb. 24-25 at McGuirk Arena, located at Central Michigan University (1200 S. Franklin St., Mt Pleasant). The Wildcats’ first-round opponent is the defending state champion Hartland Eagles.
