Grapples take third at Invite

The honors for the Varsity Wrestling team continue to mount this year.
Despite the Wildcat’s third place finish at the Detroit Catholic Central Invite on Saturday, Jan. 9, sophomore Kyle Hill was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler after capturing the 125 lb. weight division.
Hill began the tournament seeded fifth.
Junior Matt Frisch took home the gold in the 140 lb. division. Frisch finished first last year at DCC in the 125 lb. division.
Varsity Head Coach Scott Couch said that Hill and Frisch did ‘a great job.?
‘To take first in this tournament says a lot. It’s equivalent to the competition at the state tournament,? he added.
Besides Hill and Frisch, seven other wrestlers placed in the Invite. Junior Ben Ralston (145 lbs.) finished second, junior Keegan Cantara (103 lbs.), senior Steven Ferguson (119 lbs.) and sophomore Prescott Line (215 lbs.) finished third, while sophomore Jacob Peasley (112 lbs.) and junior Matt Anger (189 lbs.) finished fifth.
Senior Jack Barrie rounded out the group with a sixth-place finish in the 171 lbs. weight division.
Detroit Catholic Central won its own event, followed by Rockford in second.
Overall, Couch was pleased with his team’s performance during the Invite.
‘I think we wrestled very well against great competition across the board. It is one of the toughest tournaments in the state. I have nothing bad to say, I think we wrestled very, very well,? said Couch.
Preceding the Saturday event was their league opener against Clio and Kearsley on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Neither the Mustangs nor the Hornets were able to get going against the Wildcats. Clio lost 77-4 and the Wildcats defeated Kearsley 64-6.
‘It’s one of those things where the league is always tough and you don’t know who is going to be the one to look for,? said Couch. ‘We have to finish out our last year in the Flint Metro League strong.?
The Wildcats are 13-2 overall heading into play this week. They look to continue their strong play against Linden and Swartz Creek on Wednesday, Jan. 13 and at the Rockford Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16.
