Hockey suffers two more losses

Nearing the end of their season, the Oxford-Avondale United hockey team added two more to the loss column last week.

On Feb. 23, the boys travelled to Royal Oak and suffered a heart breaking 4-3 loss. Royal Oak got the game started and made two goals during the first period, going into the second with a 2-0 score.

OA used this second period to stage a comeback. OA struck first a few minutes into the period with a goal by defenseman Coen Hao. He was unassisted in his first goal of the season. Several minutes later, forward Jake Billis got the game tied up with another goal. He was assisted by forward Ben Pratt.

After Royal Oak got another goal on the board, Pratt tied the game up again with a goal on the power play. He was assisted by Billis. This sent the teams heading into the third period with a 3-3 score. There, OA was unable to hold out and gave up the game’s final goal.

A few nights earlier on Feb. 20, the boys took a sour 10-2 loss to Troy United. Goalie Aaron Angelo held down the fort for OA and kept Troy to just one goal from 20 shots in the first period. In the second period, Angelo would deny Troy all of its 23 shots, sending the teams into the final period with Troy leading 1-0.

The game’s final period would break the slow trend of those first two periods. Troy got a second point on the board 30 seconds in, and OA answered just seconds later with a goal of its own to make the score 2-1. It was made by forward Brian Budde, who was assisted by forward Brendan Vogler.

Before the boys could score again, Troy had the game in a 5-1 score. But, captain Ben Pratt scored an unassisted goal to get another point on the board for OA, 5-2. OA’s luck stopped there, and Troy finished the game leading 10-2.

The boys are now 4-19 overall. They played their last game of the season on Feb. 26 before the Leader went to press against Walled Lake-Waterford United.
