Icers’ losses continue to mount

This week’s play held no hope for the Oxford-Avondale United hockey team. Taking on Lapeer and Bloomfield Hills, the undermanned team picked up its 15th and 16th losses of the season this week.

On Saturday, OA hosted Lapeer and fell 6-4 in the non-conference game.

Just 30 seconds into the game, the Lightning broke away and scored a goal. But, OA came back later in the period with a goal by freshman defender Hao Coen. Sophomore forward Jake Billis grabbed an unassisted goal as well, but Lapeer had the game tied up 2-2 by the end of the first period.

OA struck early in the second period with a goal by senior forward Zach Rauh just 25 second in. Senior goalie Aaron Angelo, playing as a forward for the night, scored his second goal as an OA skater later in the period to put the boys up 4-2.

Toward the end of the second, the Lightning put in two more goals to have the game tied up again going into the third period. In that final period, Lapeer put two more pucks in the back of OA’s net to seal the deal for a 6-4 win.

Sophomore goalie Austin Spivey made 36 saves throughout the night as the starting goalie. Other key players for the OA were Jake Billis, who had an assist along with his goal, as well as forwards Brendan Vogler and Ethan Schneider, who both picked up two assists.

A few nights earlier, the OA squad travelled to take on the division leaders at Bloomfield Hills and lost 8-0.

The boys knew the Black Hawks would be a tough match and, though they were down a skater, came ready to defend their net. Angelo played as goalie for the night and held strong throughout the first period, allowing only one of the 16 shots thrown at him to get through. Throughout the night, Angelo would make 38 saves.

In the second period, Bloomfield scored four consecutive shots, going into the third period up 5-0.

Though OA did better defensively in the third quarter, the Black Hawks got three more points on the board to end the game with eight minutes to go.

The boys are now 4-16 overall.
