Lacrosse team opens inaugural season with loss

The inaugural season for the Varsity Lacrosse team got underway on Wednesday, March 31 with a 9-7 loss against Heritage High School.
‘I thought we had a respectable showing, but we were disappointed to take the loss,? said Head Coach Joe Zmikly.
Oxford trailed 4-1 after the first period, but battled back and eventually tied the game at 6 in the third. They found themselves only trailing by one goal with a minute and a half left in the game before Heritage put the game out of reach.
Senior midfielder Adam Cook led the Wildcats with three goals and senior goalie Derick Stinson made 12 saves to keep Oxford in the game.
Juniors Brandon Pilette and Christian Lopez each had an assist for the Wildcats.
‘I felt that we came out of the gate a little unsure of ourselves…once we got those early jitters out of our system, we really got rolling,? Zmikly said.
He added that he was proud of his team for showing the necessary fortitude to keep going when they found themselves trailing by four early in the game.
‘Ultimately, the hole we dug ourselves did us in, but I think we learned from it,? he said.
The boys play West Bloomfield at home on April 12 before traveling down to Troy on April 13.
