Lady Cats start the new year 2-1

Starting their OAA White play this month, the ladies basketball team took some important games on the court this week. In their efforts, they conquered two teams back-to-back and dropped one game.

On Jan. 10, the girls took on Avondale at home and lost 44-35. Avondale played a strong defensive game, holding the Wildcats to just three points throughout the first quarter. But, sophomore guard Makenzie Methner hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the second period, giving the girls a little momentum going into the game’s final half.

Though they were never able to catch up, Head Coach Rachel Bryer said the ladies played the second half as a “different team” and gave Avondale a run for its money. But with a taller roster, Bryer said Avondale maintained its advantage throughout the half.

Kicking off the week of play on Jan. 8, the Wildcats took down the Lapeer Lightning 47-36 with an 11-point margin. With the game going back and forth for the first two quarters, the Wildcats were only able to pull ahead after the offensive efforts of Methner and senior guard Ashely Hershman.

“This was a great team win,” Head Coach Rachel Bryer said. “Every time we hit the hardwood, I see something new, something great (and) improvement.”

Before the weekend on Jan. 4, the ladies pulled out another win against Farmington 46-29 in their first OAA White game of the season. Senior forward HaLaya Cato again led the Wildcats with 16 points. Junior guard Gabrielle Dinges and junior forward Aleah Dymond both put six points on the board.

The Lady Cats are now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAA White. The Wildcats will be back on the paint on Jan. 18 when they face off against Troy Athens away after they take on Rochester Adams at home on Jan. 15.
