Learning by helping

Oxford High School students in teacher Catherine DePasquale’s World Studies class are doing more than just learning about southeast Asia, they’re lending a helping hand by raising money to aid survivors of the recent tsunami.
‘Instead of just studying the history of these islands, I proposed they find a way to make a difference,? DePasquale said. ‘I’m hoping that when they look back on studying Asia, instead of a bunch of facts they might not remember, they’ll remember what happened and how they helped out.?
Students recently conducted two fund-raisers collecting $249 to aid tsunami relief efforts in the devastated region.
Last week, a raffle was held for ‘couch seats? at the boys varsity basketball game Friday night. Lucky Senior Andy Molczyk won the opportunity to watch the game courtside on an old sofa with a few close friends.
A two-day Penny War concluded Monday with students contributing lots of cash to determine which of four male teachers would end up wearing a dress for a whole day.
The winner ? or loser, depending on your point of view ? was teacher Pat Crowe. Hats off to Mr. Crowe for being a good sport and reminding us all that sometimes charity isn’t pretty. (Look for a photo of Mr. Crowe’s new fashion statement in next week’s issue.)
But the fund-raising isn’t over yet.
From now until Friday, Jan. 14, DePasquale’s students are selling special commemorative tsunami T-shirts for $10 each. The shirts? logo was designed by juniors Mykala Salquist, Anthony Koro and Cody Gould.
Junior Mike Simpson bet DePasquale that if he personally sells 50 T-shirts, she has to dye her hair hot pink.
Should Simpson succeed look for a photo of DePasquale’s new hairdo next week.
