Learning empathy for the disabled

A Disability Awareness Workshop was held at Oxford Elementary School April 14.
Sponsored by Oakland Schools, the workshop is designed to foster understanding and empathy for disabled individuals by having students participate in hands-on exercises that allow them to experience what it’s like to be handicapped.
Students learned about everything from physical and learning disabilities to visual and hearing impairments.
From crutches and wheelchairs to aids for the blind and deaf, students experienced first-hand what’s it’s like for disabled people to move around and accomplish the simple tasks most of us take for granted. Photos by C.J. Carnacchio.
