Local named Marine of Year

On Jan 8, Janey and Michael Yard got an unexpected phone call. It was their 30-year-old son, Corporal Curtis Yard, with good news.
Curtis, a 1997 Goodrich High School graduate and a US Marine Corps Corporal was named MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) Marine of the Year.
After earning a bachelor’s of science degree from Western Michigan University Curtis enlisted in the Marines in November 2006. ‘He wanted to see some of the world,? said Janey. ‘So he decided to become a Marine and enlisted immediately after graduation (from college).? Curtis started basic training at Base Camp Pendleton in California and then was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in 2007. After training, Curtis was sent to Fallujah, Iraq in 2008. There he worked with demolitions and explosives. In 2009 Curtis went to Now Zad, Afghanistan, where he was a Marine Scout Sniper.
Curtis’s nomination to become the Expeditionary Force’s Marine of the Year had to pass through many different units including company, battalion, and regiment before he was chosen.
‘We’re so proud of him,? Janey said. ‘And we are not surprised.?
