Open house at senior center set for Aug. 20

Folks who haven’t checked out Oxford Township’s new senior center are invited to do so during a special event on Tuesday, Aug. 20

There will be an open house, complete with refreshments and free gifts, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the 3,126-square-foot facility inside Seymour Lake Park. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m.

The senior center has been open to the public since June. “The people that have come in to see it, absolutely love it,” said Dawn Medici, recreation specialist and senior coordinator.

Representatives ranging from instructors to volunteers will be available during the open house to discuss the various programs, services and activities available to senior citizens, including cooking classes, card games, mahjong, book club, quilting and Meals on Wheels.

“It’s just a way for people to meet and see what we’re going to be doing in the center,” Medici said.

Medici noted Oxford High School student Ben Fracker will be at the open house to discuss the tech help he’s offering free of charge. Beginning this week, he will drop by the center on the first and third Thursdays of the month to assist seniors with their computers, tablets and wireless phones. Fracker will be there from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The senior center is open to the public between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It has cupboards filled with books, magazines, puzzles, board games and card games, plus access to two computers and a pool table.

The bocce ball courts, shuffleboard courts and horseshoe pits outside of the center are still under construction.
