Piranha on guard for 34 years

The books, magazines, CDs, tapes, records, DVDs – everything on loan and display at Oxford Public Library has been guarded by a single fish since 1998. Winston, pictured, is a Pacu fish, a freshwater species related to the piranha and native to South America. His aquarium is located so visitors to the library can see him as they walk in the entrance. According to library information, Winston is about 34 years old. Pacus are mostly vegetarian and can grow up to 60 pounds. Library information says the oldest recorded Pacu was “Butkus,” a Black Pacu who lived in a New York City Pet store for 43 years. The library is located at 530 Pontiac St. Photo by D. Rush.
