Polly Ann Trail to host Bicycle Bash Aug. 27

Family, fun and fitness will converge on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Polly Ann Trail Bicycle Bash, hosted by the Polly Ann Trail Management Council, from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Lakeville Elementary School (1400 E. Lakeville Rd.).

This “Bike Rodeo and Scavenger Hunt” will take place in two parts.

The first part of the event will be the Bike Rodeo, where riders compete in an obstacle course challenge, located in the school’s parking lot.

Following the rodeo, groups may compete in a scavenger hunt. Participants will ride along the Polly Ann Trail in search of various items. Riders will be tasked with taking pictures (by phone/camera) of the listed items and sharing the photos with a judge at the finish area.

Participants can expect to feel a sense of oneness with nature during this event, according to Trail Manager Patrick Ball.

“We just want to continue to get people out on the trail and get them to realize that it’s a gem of an all-natural trail,” Ball said. “It’s (meant to serve) not only Oxford Township but Orion Township, Addison and the Village of Leonard, and all the way around Oakland County, too. (We) want (everyone riding) down the trail to realize all the good things we have to offer recreationally.”

The public trail begins in Orion Township and continues northeast through Oxford, Addison, and Leonard to the Oakland-Lapeer county line at Bordman Rd. Connections include the Paint Creek Trail, Bald Mountain Recreation Area, Macomb Orchard Trail, Clinton River Trail, County Parks and numerous recreational and public places.

Riders will be treated to a snack at the end of the event during a “watermelon celebration.”

Packet pick up/final registration will be held from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m.

The opening ceremony will be held from 8:45 to 9 a.m. and the events will be held from 9 to 11:45 a.m.

All riders must have a helmet, be seated on a bike (or child’s bike seat) and should have a filled water bottle.

Each team for the event must consist of two to four people. More than four people may be admitted if all are immediate family.

Pre-registration costs are as follows – $28 for teams of two people; $38 for teams of three; $50 for teams of four; and $55 for teams of five or more.

Registration on the day of the event will cost an additional $5. All fees will go toward the event prizes and funding for the Polly Ann Trail.
