Solid start for cross country squads

The 2010 Varsity Cross Country Boy’s and Girls campaign kicked off with solid efforts at the Adams Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Both teams finished fourth at the Invite; Brighton High School’s boys and girls team took first.
Sophomore Brooke Kovacic shined in the event, finishing first overall in the girls meet, finishing with a sophomore record of 18:59.6. The previous record, 20:13, was set in 1984.
Finishing second for the Wildcats was freshman Alora McCoy with a 21:32, which also placed her 22nd overall. Sophomore Abby Wrobel ran a time of 21:49, placing her 26th overall.
Rounding out the top five for the girls was senior Megan Seeley with a 22:23 and senior Samantha Murphy, who ran a 23:40.
For the boys, senior Dylan Smith lead the way, placing fourth overall with a time of 17:03.
Sophomore Ryan Gillespie finished in 19th place with a time of 17:52 while sophomore Ross Chapman came in 28th with an 18:18 and junior Alec Smith was the last medalist for Oxford, finishing with a time of 18:22.
‘I was very pleased with our effort,? said Varsity Head Coach Ray Sutherland. ‘It was a very hot day and a tough course, and I thought we ran pretty good…all the medal winners did a pretty good job.?
The next chance for the team to get out and run is at the Brother Rice Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11.
