Student newspaper reports on the latest news in fifth grade

What do you turn to if you want to know the latest fashion trends or most popular singer today? If you’re a fifth grader at Andersonville Elementary School, you turn to the Andersonville Press.
The paper is the result of a good idea from friends Lacy Lobenstein and Emily Pobuda. The two decided to start the paper after a parent suggested the girls interview their friends to find the latest news at school.
Lobenstein and Pobuda are the editors of the paper and come up with the ideas for the paper’s content by themselves and then ‘assign? stories to their small staff of six students.
‘It took a lot of work and people to do it,? Pobuda said.
When the girls put up a sing up sheet in their class looking for help, they were surprised by the results.
‘It was filled up in, like, one second because everyone thought it was a good idea,? Pobuda said.
Working during recess and free time in school, the girls use all the extra time they can to produce their product. The dedication to the paper is great when fifth graders can give up recess…
‘Especially when it’s our last year of it,? Pobuda said.
The paper is created primarily at school.
‘When we play basketball and it’s not our turn, we go to the computer and work on it,? Lobenstein said.
Lobenstein oversees the fashion aspect of the paper while Pobuda covers school events. Articles in the paper’s first edition covered topics such as girls? fashion, Andersonville’s upcoming ‘Fun Run? Oct.7 and even weather updates.
‘We talk about an event and then follow up,? Pobuda said.
Production is happening on the paper’s next issue. Eventually Lobenstein and Pobuda hope to have an issue out the first and last Friday of every month.
Reaction to the inaugural issue has been very good so far, according to the editors. Students have already voiced ideas for the follow-up issue on what they’d like to see.
‘When it comes out everyone comes up to us and is complimenting us on it,? Lobenstein said.
So far a boys? fashion feature is planned as are ‘picks of the week? for various entertainment aspects, such as singer Ashlee Simpson’s latest album.
‘All the boys kept coming up to me and said, ‘Do I have to wear a skirt??? Lobenstein said of her male classmates? responses.
The editors plan on interviewing the new students and teachers at Andersonville for the next edition. The two have big plans for their little paper.
‘I want it to go to all Clarkston schools,? Lobenstein said. ‘It’s not your average newspaper.?
