Swim team loses opener to Berkley

Oxford’s Varsity Girls swim team came up short against Berkley in the first league dual meet of the season against Berkley Sept. 2, losing 97-88.

It was a close match-up between Oxford and Berkley, both Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Blue Division teams, with Oxford winning seven of the 12 events.

The results are as follows:

In the 200 Medley Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of Alexander, Weltyk, Giannola, and Commons finished first with a time of 2:01.32.

In the 200 Freestyle: Oxford Sophomore Claire Alexander took first with a time of 2:08.10, which moved her up to third on Oxford’s All-Time Top Ten list. Senior Captain Danielle Kemp claimed fifth place for Oxford.

In the 200 Individual Medley, Oxford Freshman Ashlee Weltyk came in first with a time of 2:24.19, which puts her fourth on the All-Time Top Ten list. Junior Emily Vican took fourth place.

In the 50 Freestyle, Senior Captain Bella Giannola finished second for Oxford with a time of 27.23. Sabrina Kurk finished fourth and Christina Boydston finished fifth.

In the diving portion, Oxford Senior Jenna Zeiter came in first with a score of 182.00. Keira Veltigian took third and freshman Emma Moore finished fifth, putting her in the ninth spot on the All-Time Top Ten list.

In the100 Butterfly, Senior Captain Danielle Kemp placed second with a time of 1:11.77. Emily Vican took third for Oxford.

In the100 Freestyle, Junior Captain Rachel Commons finished second with a time of 59.17, moving her up to fifth on the All-Time Top Ten list. Christina Boydston placed fourth for Oxford.

In the 500 Freestyle, Oxford Freshman Sabrina Kurk came in second with a time of 6:05.54, putting her tenth on the All-Time Top Ten list. Sophomore Cailin Griffith finished in fourth place.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of Boydston, Schonfeld, Kemp, and Kurk took second with a time of 1:56.66.

In the 100 Backstroke, Oxford Sophomore Claire Alexander finished first with a time of 1:06.43. Alexander is currently third in this event on the All-Time Top Ten list. Tate Hamilton placed fourth and Paige Hodder placed fifth.

In the 100 Breaststroke, Oxford Freshman Ashlee Weltyk came in first with a time of 1:14.49, which puts her second on the All-Time Top Ten list. Rachel Commons placed fourth for Oxford.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of Giannola, Alexander, Commons, and Weltyk took first with a time of 4:03.48.

Swim & Dive Head Coach Jackie Rank said the team will use this as an opportunity to continue evolving as a team.

“One thing that we need to work on is mental toughness at practice so that their endurance at meets improves,” Rank said. “This is a great group of girls and I have no doubt that they will rise to the challenge.”

The girls will swim against Ferndale High School at home September 8. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
