Track teams take on Wolves, then Shake Off the Rust

Oxford’s track and field athletes took on the Clarkston Wolves and participated in a Davison invitational last week. At both events, a number of athletes continued to top the leader board.

At the Shake Off the Rust Invitational in Davison on April 12, many Oxford athletes were invited to compete. From those who went, the girls took fifth place with 76 points and the boys took sixth place with 65 points. Both competed in the large bracket.

Junior Antonia Vackaro led the ladies with second place finishes in the 200 and 400 Meter contests. In another running event, Aleah Dymond, Maddy Lukens, Lauren Schiller and Ellie DiMalanta took third in the 3,200 Meter Relay.

In the field events, freshman Eriana Hubbard led the Wildcats by placing third in shot put.

Oxford’s boys fared well in the invitational’s running events. Leading the way was junior Scott Masterson, who took second in the 800 Meter and was part of the winning 1,600 Meter Relay team. The relay team, made of Masterson, Shane Ross, Logan Coughlin and Simon Arnold, ran a time of 3:37.85 for the win.

The boys also did well in the 800 Meter Relay with a third place finish. The runners were Masterson, Ross, Trey Townsend and Barett Coleman. Senior Hunter Green also grabbed third in the 3,200 Meter race.

On the field, senior Anthony Romeo took third in the High Jump. Another senior, Sam Murray, grabbed a high placement with a tie for third in Pole Vault.

On April 10, Oxford hosted the Clarkston Wolves. The boys left with a 79-49 victory and the ladies took an 84-44 loss.

Leading the track events were Masterson and Coleman with two event wins apiece. Masterson took first in the 100 Meter Dash with 11.56 seconds and the 800 Meter with 2:01.22.Coleman took first in the 110 and 300 Meter Hurdle events, running times of 16.74 and 48.70, respectively.

Romeo led the field events with wins in the High Jump and Long Jump. He made leaps of six feet and 19 feet, 2 inches, respectively.

Other key athletes for the boys were Arnold with a 51.01 second win in the 400 Meter, Ross with first in the 200 Meter race in 23.62 seconds, Green with second in the 3,200 Meter contest and junior Christian Lebich with second in both Shot Put and Discus.

As for the ladies, Vackaro led Oxford in the loss. She took first in the 200 Meter contest in 26.54 seconds and claimed second in the 400 Meter.

Other event winners for the Lady Cats were junior Mattie Johnson in the 100 Meter Hurdle with 17.11 seconds and Hubbard in Shot Put with a 31 foot, 7.75 inch throw.

The boys are now 1-1 overall and the ladies are 0-2 overall for their meets. The Wildcats will head to Rochester High tonight, April 17, for a meet.
