Police officers don’t just bust bad guys and issue traffic tickets.

They also save lives.

That’s what Oxford Village Police Officer Paula Grech and James Owens, a reserve officer, did. At last week’s council meeting, they were honored for their efforts.

Police Sgt. Mike Solwold presented each of them with a lifesaving ribbon for their actions on July 6.

The officers were dispatched to a house on Pontiac St. for a medical emergency involving a 67-year-old man in full cardiac arrest.

When they arrived, Solwold said the victim was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse.

Grech and Owens immediately began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and continued until Oxford fire personnel arrived. During that time, the victim started to breathe again on his own.

“As a result of the officers’ immediate response and quick thinking, a life was saved,” Solwold said.

The sergeant told council and the audience that Grech and Owens “reflect the highest standard of the law enforcement profession and personify the agency goal to serve and protect the residents of the community.”

“Your outstanding performance, quick action and dedication to duty make you a credit to the entire law enforcement profession,” Solwold said. “Thank you very much.”
