Who turned out the lights?

A large portion of Oxford and Addison townships lost power Thursday for a couple hours.

According to the DTE Energy outage map, at one point, approximately 3,600 customers in the 48371 zip code were without electricity.

Based on the map, the outage extended to the west near Davis Lake, to the east near Lake George Rd. in Addison, to the south near Indian Lake Rd. and to the north between Burdick and Market streets.

The power went out before 11 a.m. and wasn’t fully restored to everybody until approximately 1 p.m.

DTE Spokesperson Lisa Bolla said there were actually two outages during that time frame – one caused by equipment damage and another caused by animals at the DTE substation in downtown Oxford.

“There were a couple of squirrels that chewed partially through a very high-voltage power line that was feeding power to the substation,” she explained.
