Wildcats bowling over competition

Oxford’s bowling teams traveled to the OAA Team Championship tournament Feb. 19, which led to a first-place finish for the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Wildcats ended up seeded 3rd before beating Clarkston in Round 1, Lake Orion in Round 2 and North Farmington in the finals.

The boys varsity team also bowled that day, finishing second in the finals. The team beat Lake Orion and Royal Oak before losing to Farmington Harrison in the finals.

The boys were crowned OAA Red division champions for the regular season. It’s the fourth straight year the boys have won the title.

Eight Oxford bowlers were honored with “All-Conference” awards.

Megan Kessler and Christian Cartner were first team. Kessler also won the High Average crown for the Red division girls.

Earning second team honors were Tanner Cartner, Luke Meyer and Megan Armbruster.

Claire Sandstrom, Deanna Staser and Jimmy Dehmel were named to the third team.

OAA coaches honored the Wildcats girls and boys teams by presenting them with the “Team Sportsmanship” awards.

The junior varsity boys and girls teams competed in the Michigan Junior Varsity State tournament. The JV girls took 4th place in the girls division. The boys qualified 8th but lost in round 1.

During the singles of the event, nearly 70 girls competed to get into the top 32 positions. Oxford’s Erin Dinan came out of qualifying in the 13th seeded position to win the state title.

In Round 1, she beat the 20th seed from Dakota. She then faced Oxford’s Mya Bruno. Bruno captured the number 4 seed but lost to Dinan in a later match. She then beat two Dakota bowlers in rounds 3 and 4, before matching up with Salem’s Katie Collins.

Dinan shot her best game of the day with a 201 score to Collin’s 157 to capture the title.

“This was a very special weekend for our bowling team. Erin’s win was fantastic and the Varsity girls’ winning the OAA Team tournament was great. I think being honored by the OAA Coaches (for) having good sportsmanship was the most special. The team was very honored,” said Head Coach J.R. Lafnear.

The Wildcat bowlers will compete in team and singles regionals February 24 and 25 at 300 Bowl (100 S. Cass Lake Rd., Waterford Twp).
