Wildcats take league title heading into district play

This past Friday the Oxford Wildcats graplers squared off with OAA Red foes for an exciting individual tournament. The Young Wildcats showed heart and grit in placing all 14 weight classes to secure the OAA Red league title.
Oxford’s Individual Champions were 130 Jack Thompson, 135 Nathan Call, and 140 Jack Smith.

After winning the Oakland Athletic Association Red league title last Friday, the Oxford High School wrestling team mugged for the camera. This week the team heads to Romeo for state district playoffs. Photo provided.

“With the starting weight being 135 this weekend, Nater and Smitty did a really nice job of setting the tone each new round. JT (Jack Thompson) on the inverse closed every round with a physical display many are unable to replicate,” said coach Ross Wingert.
Wingert said Oxford continues to improve and the team is very excited for the opportunity ahead to avenge a loss Wednesday (tonight) against Romeo at Romeo for team districts.
“Much like any team, we have had our ups and downs this season. Right now our young men are at the peak of their physical, and more importantly, mental confidence this season. Their energy in the room right now is contagious and spreading like wildfire. We’re looking forward to making up those 19 points against Romeo this week, our boys have accepted the challenge.”
The Cats finished 4-1 in the OAA division.
