A 28-year-old female occupant of a mobile home in Oxford’s Parkhurst Estates was injured in a Friday night fire that destroyed the trailer.
The fire occurred at 335 Brook Hollow. Firefighters were dispatched at 10:17 p.m.
According to Fire Chief Pete Scholz, the woman, who’s not the homeowner, sustained second-degree burns on her face and suffered smoke inhalation.
‘She was asleep in the bedroom when the smoke awoke her,? he said.
The woman sustained her injuries while escaping the burning trailer. She was transported to POH Regional Medical Center in Pontiac.
Scholz said when firefighters arrived at 10:22 p.m., the 14-foot-by-70-foot mobile home was fully involved.
‘There were flames (shooting) out the windows and through the roof,? he said.
The fire was declared under control at 10:56 p.m. Cause is undetermined at this point and is under investigation per standard procedure. It appears the fire began in the center of the home, which is in the kitchen area, according to Scholz.
Scholz noted the ‘sad part? was the trailer had no functioning smoke detectors.
‘Had they had one, she probably would have got out without getting injured,? he said.
What’s ironic is the fire department recently distributed and installed 150-160 free smoke detectors throughout the Parkhurst and Lake Villa mobile home communities .
The smoke detectors were given away to any resident who requested them.
‘We sent out flyers to everybody,? Scholz said. ‘All they had to do was fill it out and turn it in.?
