Mattress blaze part of alleged suicide attempt

An early morning fire Tuesday at the Parkhurst Mobile Home Park in Oxford Township appears to have been the result of an alleged suicide attempt.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Deputy Guy Hubble, a 20-year-old Oxford man residing at 311 Brookhollow Drive allegedly set his mattress and box-spring on fire using gasoline in an alleged attempt to commit suicide shortly after 6:30 a.m.
Hubble said the young man appeared to be suffering from some mental difficulties.
According to Hubble’s report, the young man was found lying on the burning bed in a state described as ‘unresponsive and just staring? by his father, who pulled him from the bedroom and into the kitchen.
The young man told his father ‘We are all going to Hell? and declared, ‘Let’s finish this? right before he attempted to re-enter the bedroom, the sheriff’s report stated.
The father restrained his son and prevented him from re-entering the room until sheriff’s deputies arrived.
The victim told deputies ‘he wanted to die? and admitted using gas to start the fire, the report stated.
The young man was transported via AMR ambulance to POH Medical Center in Pontiac for treatment of possible second and third-degree burns to his face, head, and hands, according to Hubble.
Oxford firefighters extinguished the blaze. Chief Jack LeRoy estimated the fire caused about $500 in structural damage and about $500 in contents damage.
The fire is currently being investigated by the OCSD Fire Investigation Unit.
