Strong winds caused a tree branch to fall on some power lines late Tuesday afternoon, which led to the loss of electricity for about 600 customers in the Village of Oxford.
The incident happened at 14 Dennison St., which is the home of Oxford Township Supervisor Bill Dunn.
According to Fire Chief Pete Scholz, strong winds caused a tree branch to break off in Dunn’s yard and fall on some nearby power lines. This caused the electrical wires to arc, burn apart and fall to the ground.
As a result, firefighters closed off Dennison St. between M-24 and Hovey St.
The incident happened around 4:15 p.m. Workers from DTE Energy arrived on scene around 5:15 p.m.
Along with many residences, the power outage also impacted downtown businesses on the west side of M-24 and caused the main traffic signal at M-24 and Burdick St. to go out.
DTE workers restored power to the downtown area first. Power was finally restored to all residential customers shortly before 11 p.m.
Dunn, who literally arrived home from vacation just minutes after the power lines fell, joked that this is one thing people cannot blame on him.
