What’s in a name?

The Oxford Wildcats have been a force to be reckoned with in the Flint Metro League for more than 15 years.
But soon that may come to an end.
FML officials said the name may change, but the league’s composition (i.e. its member school districts) will stay the same.
‘We like the FML attachment,? said Oxford High School principal Mike Schweig, ‘but the name is a misnomer.?
Schweig and principals from the six other league districts are trying to change the name to better reflect its members? actual geographic location.
Not one of the seven districts (Oxford, Brandon, Linden, Lapeer East, Fenton, Holly, and Lapeer West) are in the Flint metro area.
In 1983, the Wildcats were bumped into the FML because of district population increases.
‘Over the years in the conference, the FML has offered stability but I don’t know of any association with Flint,? Schweig said.
‘We are so diverse in terms of distance, we as principals in the league, decided we are going to have to come up with other ideas,? Schweig said.
FML President Dr. Michael Ferguson said the league board is open to suggestions for a more appropriate conference name and is taking idea from its members? high school student councils.
Schweig added that he is also open for suggestions and residents can call him with ideas at (248) 969-5100.
