‘Cans for a cause’

Four kids were seen walking the streets of the Oxford Lakes subdivision Jan. 10. No, they weren’t skipping school. There was no school that day due to the inclement weather.
But instead of spending their unexpected day off playing video games, watching television or lounging around on the couch, these unselfish kids walked door-to-door in the icy rain to raise money to aid the tsunami survivors in south Asia.
Corey Bell, 11, Nikki Bell, 9, Nick Balch, 11, and Adam Bell, 6, spent the day collecting returnable bottles and cans from their Oxford Lakes neighbors.
Corey Bell came up with the idea that morning. ‘I’m not sure what made him think about it,? said Corey’s mother Shelly Bell. ‘But he came to me and asked how he could help the people still suffering from the tsunami.?
The compassionate kids collected 1,165 bottles and cans plus $90 in cash for a grand total of $206.50, all of which will be sent to those still suffering in South Asia. The quartet will continue to collect cans over the next few weeks. Anyone wishing to contribute can call Shelly Bell at 248-628-4622.
